Red Hat Text

About

Red Hat Text is a geometric sans-serif typeface family designed by Jeremy Mickel of MCKL for Red Hat's identity. It features two optical sizes—Display and Text—with a range of weights from Light to Bold, including italics. The Text styles offer a slightly smaller x-height and narrower width for improved legibility at small sizes, while the Display styles are more tightly spaced with a large x-height. The family supports Latin and Latin Extended scripts and is available as a variable font with a weight axis.

Overview

Red Hat Text is a fresh take on the geometric sans genre, inspired by American sans serifs such as Tempo and Highway Gothic. The Text styles have thinned joins and generous spacing for better performance in body text, whereas the Display styles emphasize low contrast and open counters for impactful headlines. The family was commissioned by Paula Scher at Pentagram and has been refined to improve weight distribution and fluidity in its variable font implementation. It is well suited for a wide range of design applications requiring clear, modern typography.
