Jaini Purva

About

Jaini Purva is a display font family designed to revive the calligraphic style of Jain Kalpasutra manuscripts from 1503 CE. It features a disconnected shirorekha with triangular wedges, short upper matras, squarish letterforms with large kana height, and vertically stacked conjuncts true to manuscript tradition. The design adapts historical letter-shapes for contemporary use, offering a unique visual identity in Devanagari typography.

Overview

Jaini Purva is a single-weight display typeface that draws from the calligraphic style of ancient Jain manuscripts, emphasizing vertical conjuncts and distinctive letterforms not commonly seen in modern Devanagari fonts. Its design includes heavy knots and integration of lower matras within the kana height, preserving historical manuscript aesthetics. This font supports Devanagari, Latin, and Latin-Extended subsets, making it suitable for multilingual contexts where a traditional yet contemporary Indian typographic voice is desired.
