About

Jaini is a display typeface family that draws from the calligraphic style of Jain Kalpasutra manuscripts dating back to 1503 CE, featuring unique letterforms such as disconnected shirorekha and squarish letters. Its Latin companion reflects a modern Indian hand-lettering style, harmonizing visually with the Devanagari forms. Designed to revive and adapt historic manuscript aesthetics for contemporary use, Jaini balances tradition with modern readability.

Overview

Jaini is a display font family encompassing Devanagari and Latin scripts, designed to capture the calligraphic essence of Jain Kalpasutra manuscripts from the early 16th century. The Devanagari style includes distinctive features like triangular wedges on the shirorekha, short upper matras, and heavy knots, while the Latin letters are inspired by present-day Indian street lettering with subtle shirorekha hints. Jaini adapts these historic manuscript traits into contemporary letterforms, making it suitable for expressive display use. The Devanagari and Latin components were designed by Girish Dalvi, Maithili Shingre, and Taresh Vohra under the Ek Type collective.
