Harmattan is a sans-serif font family created to meet the needs of languages using the Arabic script in West Africa. It features a simplified Warsh style with basic connecting glyphs and essential ligatures, including lam-alef. The family includes four weights and supports nearly all Arabic Unicode characters up to version 15.0, including extended blocks and Kyrgyz language support. It is maintained by SIL International and designed by a team led by Becca Hirsbrunner.
Overview
Harmattan is designed in a Warsh style tailored for West African Arabic script languages, providing a simplified rendering with basic connecting glyphs and only required ligatures. The family includes four weights, covering nearly all Arabic Unicode 15.0 characters except certain extended ranges. It supports Arabic, Arabic Supplement, and most of Arabic Extended-A blocks, with added Kyrgyz language support. The project is maintained by SIL International with contributions from multiple designers.
