Girassol

About

Girassol captures the spirit of Carcavelos through its condensed proportions, moderate contrast, and thorny serifs that extend beyond the baseline and cap height. Its design includes playful ligatures and a complementary smallcaps set with softer, square proportions. Ideal for large titles and graphic vignettes, Girassol brings a handcrafted, expressive character to display typography.

Overview

Girassol is a display typeface inspired by the hand-painted street signs in and around Carcavelos, Portugal. It synthesizes the identity and spirit of the region with a personal design approach. The font features condensed proportions, moderate contrast, and decorative serifs that pierce the baseline and cap height. Playful flourishes and numerous discretionary ligatures evoke the improvisational feel of the original signage. The smallcaps complement the main capitals with a softer, more square proportion, adding versatility. Girassol excels in large, striking titles and smaller graphic vignettes where its unique character can shine.
